OUR BEANS

We buy our green beans from coffee importers whose mission it is to “build, support, and foster sustainable relationships with our suppliers, customers, communities, and the environment.” This allows us to offer the finest Arabica coffees, including certified Fair-Trade Organic, Organic and Rainforest Alliance, Estate, Co-op, and unique small lot coffees.  Check out our shirts and other merchandise, including Gypsy Souls Flags, as seen on social media sites from all over the world.

Soft, light spice, berries and chocolate, clean, sweet aftertaste. “AA” is the grade of coffee and is from a co-operative of plantations called Arokara, who do not use any chemicals or fertilizers in the production process.

MEDIUM ROASTS

Costa Rica

Citric, balanced body, creamy, chocolate, caramelized sugar, fruity.  This unique Honey processed coffee comes from the Turrabares farm in the West Valley region of Costa Rica.  The farm is 60 hectares large and sits about 1500 meters above sea level, providing the perfect environment for a bean to undergo a slow maturation process.  The Naranjo Mountains where the farm is located has had the reputation of producing some of the best coffee in the country, due to the rich volcanic soil in the region.

Guatemala

Snappy acidity, medium body, with rich spicy fruit notes and a sweet finish. “SHB” (“strictly hard bean”) is grown at 4500 feet and above in this country. Huehuetenango is in the northwest region of the country and borders Mexico.

Mexico

A milder coffee.  Sweet with a hint of dark chocolate, medium body, dry, low acid. SHG means “strictly high grown” and is from the Chiapas region of Mexico.  Jacinto is a region of Chiapas.

Panama

Round body, smooth, some malt, caramel, clean, consistent. Lerida is a “finca” (estate) in the Boquete region of the country. This estate won “Best of Panama” in 2002 and has since placed in the top ten for several years.

Peru

Full body, creamy, sweet hints of spice and floral aromas. The La Florida coffee collective has around 1,200 members, at it’s peak.  The collective’s commitment to environmental protection has led the cooperative to educate farmers on how to protect the soil from erosion, retain moisture and restore its fertility.  Members believe it is vital to support the ecosystem as it is home to many different species of insects, birds and animals. For over thirteen years, CAC La Florida has been committed to providing high quality, organic coffee.

DARK ROASTS

Indonesia

Low acidity and a richness that lingers on the back of the palate. Strong woody notes, consistent, balanced, sweet tobacco, winey, spicy. Notes of chocolate are evident in the finish. Sumatra is one of the islands of the Malay Archipelago of Indonesia, formed by volcanos, therefore, mountainous and has rich soil that is ideal for growing coffee.

Kenya

Molasses, rich body, complex acidity, smooth winey flavor and aroma, intense stone fruit flavors.  Even sweeter as it cools.  Very consistent in quality.  “AA” denotes the larger, sought after bean.  The “Plus” distinction indicates that only a minimal amount of defects were allowed as long as they have no effect on the cup.  Red, loamy soil and startlingly high altitudes contribute to a juicy, berry-flavored cup. One of Africa’s finest!

Malawi

Malawai Mzuzu AA Women’s coffee blend is from approximately 200 small scale farmers.  Altogether, the Malawi Mzuzu Cooperative is made up of approximately 4,000 small scale farmers spanning over five coffee districts.  All the coffees are processed by the fully washed method and then sun dried. Mzuzu Women’s Coffee is traceable to women farmers who own their own coffee fields. The proceeds are paid directly to those women in order to give them decision-making power over their income. Additionally a $0.20/lb is paid to the Women in Coffee program. About half of this premium is paid directly to the women farmers, and the other half is used on Women’s Coffee projects determined by the participating farmers after premiums are received.

SPECIALTY ROASTS

Espresso

Our own Gypsy Beans Blend is dominated by a clean, dry-processed coffee that is typically found in an Italian Blend.  We’ve added a Central America component for structure, then spiced it up with a little African coffee.  Roasted dark but not burned!

Decaf

This is a patented “eco-friendly” water decaffeination process.  Many methods use chemical solvents to strip caffeine molecules from the green coffee bean and some leave behind more caffeine than you would think.  Alternatively, the SWISS WATER Process uses water from the coastal mountains of British Colombia, Canada to gently remove the caffeine until the coffee beans are 99.9% caffeine-free.
